Lamps Plus is not a lighting brand — it's a lighting retailer, the largest specialty lighting chain in the United States. This distinction matters enormously when evaluating it. When you buy from Lamps Plus, you are buying from hundreds of different manufacturers at once. The Lamps Plus name on the box tells you nothing about the quality of what's inside.
This means the Lamps Plus experience is fundamentally different from buying from a brand. You can find excellent fixtures at Lamps Plus. You can also find fixtures that belong in a different product tier entirely. The catalog contains both, and the website rarely helps you distinguish between them.
We bought four fixtures from Lamps Plus across a range of price points: an entry-level pendant at $89, a mid-range pendant at $195, a semi-flush ceiling mount at $240, and a wall sconce from what Lamps Plus markets as a "premium" manufacturer at $410.
The $89 pendant: thin metal casting, visible parting lines on the socket housing, a shade that sits slightly off-center. Not unacceptable at $89. But we wouldn't buy it for a room we care about.
The $195 mid-range pendant: genuinely solid. Good weight, consistent finish, shade sits true. This is the sweet spot at Lamps Plus — mid-range prices often deliver surprisingly good build quality because the volume buying power keeps costs down.
The $240 semi-flush: acceptable. Not exceptional. Ceiling canopy was stamped rather than cast, which reads as a cost-cutting move at this price.
The $410 "premium" sconce: disappointing. The finish was good, but the glass shade had a visible inclusion (a small bubble) that we wouldn't expect at this price point. At $410 from Lamps Plus, we are not getting $410 of quality — we're getting a mid-range fixture with a designer-adjacent SKU number.
The catalog is genuinely enormous — over 70,000 items at last count. If you need a very specific size, finish, or configuration, Lamps Plus probably has it. No other retailer we tested comes close on selection breadth.
Shipping was consistently fast — all four of our test orders arrived within 4 business days. The return process was online and straightforward, with a 30-day window and free return shipping on most items. This operational excellence is real and worth crediting.
The problem is the premium tier. At $89–$150, Lamps Plus delivers reasonable quality for the price. At $300–$500+, you're often paying for the price point without getting the build quality. The $410 sconce we bought should not have had a glass inclusion. At that price, QC should catch that.
If you are buying from Lamps Plus, stick to the $120–$220 range where value is best. Avoid their "premium" SKUs unless you have a specific design that can't be found elsewhere — you'll likely get better quality at the same price from a focused brand.
An excellent retailer for selection and logistics. A mediocre brand benchmark for quality. Use Lamps Plus when you need a specific hard-to-find SKU or are buying in the $100–$200 range where the value is real. Avoid the premium tier — there are better options for the same money from focused brands with quality controls.
For any fixture over $200, we'd check BO-HA before Lamps Plus. The build quality at BO-HA is more consistent — every unit we tested matched every other unit.
